9-Me-BC is a German-developed beta-carboline small molecule, not a peptide, studied in cell culture and rodents for dopaminergic neuron protection and regeneration as a candidate Parkinson’s treatment. What it is

9-Methyl-beta-carboline (9-Me-BC) is a small synthetic molecule in the beta-carboline (pyridoindole) family, developed and studied largely by a German research group centered at the Technical University of Dresden (Polanski, Gille, Reichmann and colleagues). It is not a peptide. Beta-carbolines as a class include both toxic and protective members; 9-Me-BC is specifically studied as a candidate with stimulatory and protective effects on dopaminergic neurons, positioning it as a potential Parkinson’s disease treatment.

What has actually been tested

Published research describes 9-Me-BC increasing tyrosine hydroxylase expression and neurite outgrowth in dopaminergic neurons, inhibiting monoamine oxidase A and B (with an IC50 of about 1 micromolar for MAO-A and 15.5 micromolar for MAO-B in one cell-culture study), and stimulating astrocytes to express neurotrophic factors including BDNF, through a mechanism reported to run via the organic cation transporter and the PI3K signalling pathway. These findings come from cultured dopaminergic and cortical astrocyte cell lines and from rodent studies; no human trial was located for this entry.

No registered clinical trial of 9-Me-BC, for Parkinson’s disease or any other indication, appears on ClinicalTrials.gov.

What is not known

Whether 9-Me-BC’s dopaminergic-neuron-protective and MAO-inhibiting effects, established in cell culture and rodent models, reproduce in a human being with Parkinson’s disease or any other condition. No human trial exists.

Human pharmacokinetics, human dosing, and human safety, including interactions relevant to a compound that inhibits monoamine oxidase, a drug class with well-known interaction risks (notably with other serotonergic or dopaminergic agents) that has not been characterised for this specific molecule in people.

Whether 9-Me-BC’s reported benefits can be separated from the toxic effects associated with other members of the beta-carboline family it belongs to.
